Operate Breathing Apparatus

Course Objective

This course covers the skills and knowledge required to operate and maintain breathing apparatus and equipment in an irrespirable atmosphere, use and maintenance of respiratory protective equipment.

This unit of competency applies to operators who are required to wear breathing apparatus because they are working: in a confined space, with hazardous gases/vapours, in an oxygen deficient atmosphere
in other situations requiring the wearing of breathing apparatus.

On successful completion of this course students will be issued with a Statement of Attainment for MSMWHS216 Operate breathing apparatus and an Operate breathing apparatus Duty of Care Card.

Selection Criteria

Learners must meet the following requirements to participate:

  • Photo ID (driver’s licence, passport, proof of age card).
  • Clean‑shaven – no facial hair in the mask seal area (AS/NZS 1715 requirement).
  • Physically capable of wearing BA equipment (~15 kg), working in low‑visibility conditions, and performing practical tasks.
  • Basic English skills – able to read instructions, follow safety directions, and communicate during practical activities.
  • Correct PPE – long pants, long sleeves, enclosed safety footwear.

Course Content

  • Conduct pre-donning checks and tests on breathing apparatus
  • Operate breathing apparatus Conclude operations in accordance with procedures
  • Operators may also be required to wear breathing apparatus in emergency situations, however, this is not the prime focus of this unit.

Pre-Course Requirements

Before attending, learners must:

  • Complete any pre‑learning provided (if applicable).
  • Provide their USI (Unique Student Identifier).
  • Complete the LLN section of the enrolment form.
  • Notify StaySafe Training if they require additional support or a pre‑course meeting with a trainer.

Course Details

Duration: 4 hour course
Time: 8am - 12pm (unless negotiated otherwise)
Cost: $450.00* per person or $320.00 with CITB funding

Other Fees if Applicable

  • Verbal Assessment $ 75.00
  • Re-Assessment Fee (only applicable if Learner is required to come back for re-assessment - Contact Office for more details)
  • Re-issue of card $ 50.00

Fees must be paid in full before the course date or payment arrangement in place.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is available and assessed on a case-by-case basis. Applicants must provide sufficient current evidence and may be required to undertake practical demonstration and/or challenge assessment.

Delivery Mode: Face-to-face training and assessment conducted at our approved training facility or client site (where applicable).

  • Written knowledge assessment
  • Practical demonstration
  • Verbal questioning (where applicable)

This course is delivered using a single comprehensive delivery model. All learners, including refresher participants, complete the full assessment requirements.
